Odysseus: For some, war becomes home
After 20 years, Odysseus finally returns to Ithaca, where he finds his wife imprisoned by suitors competing for the title of king, and his son, who is threatened with death at their hands. In order to bring back his family and everything he lost, Odysseus must regain his strength. For the third time, Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche are starring together in a film. Earlier, they worked together on the films “Stormy Pass” (1992) and “The English World” (1996). Penelope: How can people find their way to war, but not find their way home?

Homer’s ODYSSEY, one of the greatest works of Western literature, has been repeatedly retold in cinema and in various ways. This version is different in that it focuses on the human elements of the story, when Odysseus finally returns to Ithaca after 10 years of hard fighting only to find his kingdom in serious decline and his wife in the hands of bandits , who ask to marry her in order to get their money and kingdom, because everyone thinks that Odysseus is dead. They threaten to take her and Ithaca by force if she does not choose one of them as her husband. After 10 years, Odysseus has become unrecognizable, and he needs to assess the situation before planning his strategy to get rid of these vile people who bleed his land and take his rightful place as king. This is not a film loaded with computer graphics special effects and aimed at teenagers, but rather at intelligent adults with adult emotions and rationality. The cult script of the late Edward Bond, John Collie and Uberto Pasolini is a pleasure to listen to, especially when it is performed by first-class actors.
It shows an excellent and complex game
But in most of the film there are no dialogues at all. The actors work a lot with the “subtext”, especially the brilliant Juliette Binoche in the role of Penelope. Ralph Fiennes gives the best performance I’ve ever seen. Mr. Pasolini also directs the film and does a good job of keeping it focused and tense.

The photography is by Marius Pandourou, who is wonderfully assisted by the magnificent scenery of the island of Corfu. The impressive and restrained soundtrack was written by Oscar winner Rachel Portman. If this bothers you, be aware that the film has a lot of blood and violence, as well as some nudity (including Mr. I am very grateful to the producers for finding the courage to make a film aimed at intelligent adults. I hope he gets enough public support to encourage others to do the same.
